A very troubling trend seems to be starting within the online poker affiliate world. Affiliate programs are starting to close affiliate accounts due to inactivity and or not generating enough real money players for a given time frame.
This is essentially nothing more than a money grab as many small time affiliates that have an account closed will most likely not care to remove the affiliate links. If that link generates just one real money player over the course of a year the affiliate program got the player for free.
A thread was started on PokerAffiliateListings.com when the email from Carbon Poker started to show up in a few affiliates email accounts.
MJ on PokerAffiliateListings had the following to say with regards to receiving an email that his Carbon Poker affiliate account was going to be closed:
I’m curious Atil, is the motivation behind this preventing under the table rakeback or what? It seems to me that if you are still planning to pay these closed accounts earnings, then the account needs to remain open for transparency, why would you deny your brand the opportunity for some random affiliate to send a whale over? I’m confused. What does it cost you to leave the accounts open?
MJ does raise some rather good points as the affiliate programs are all digital and automated making them essentially maintenance free for the operator.
Affiliates should defiantly take notice and stay away from programs who are going down this route as the affiliate programs will always try to nickle and dime to gain a little extra at the expense of hard working affiliates.
